What is an ultrasound examination
Ultrasonography (ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging method that uses sound waves. It emits no radiation, is painless, and completely safe — it can be repeated as often as needed, including in newborns and infants. The examination produces real-time images — the doctor sees the structures on screen during the scan and can discuss the results immediately.
At NidoMed, we perform ultrasound examinations in the following areas:
- Infant hip ultrasound — screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip. Recommended at 6-8 weeks of age.
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound — imaging of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Useful for injuries, inflammatory conditions, and joint pain.
- Soft tissue ultrasound — assessment of lumps, subcutaneous changes, and swelling.
An ultrasound at our clinic can be performed as a standalone diagnostic examination or as an extension of an orthopaedic consultation — the orthopaedic surgeon orders and performs the scan during the same visit.
When to have an ultrasound
- Your infant is 6-8 weeks old — routine hip screening (especially with risk factors: breech delivery, family history of dysplasia, low amniotic fluid).
- Joint, muscle, or tendon pain after an injury — assessing the extent of damage.
- Swelling, clicking, or joint instability — ultrasound as rapid diagnostics before a potential MRI.
- Suspected tendon inflammation (tendinopathy) or bursitis.
- A lump or change in soft tissue requiring assessment.
- Post-treatment follow-up — evaluating tendon or muscle healing.
What to expect
The examination takes 15-30 minutes depending on the scope. The doctor applies gel to the skin and moves the transducer — this is the only "discomfort", and it is minimal. For infants, the hip scan takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Results are available immediately — the doctor discusses them after the examination and provides a written report.
