What is an ultrasound examination

Ultrasonography (ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging method that uses sound waves. It emits no radiation, is painless, and completely safe — it can be repeated as often as needed, including in newborns and infants. The examination produces real-time images — the doctor sees the structures on screen during the scan and can discuss the results immediately.

At NidoMed, we perform ultrasound examinations in the following areas:

  • Infant hip ultrasound — screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip. Recommended at 6-8 weeks of age.
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound — imaging of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Useful for injuries, inflammatory conditions, and joint pain.
  • Soft tissue ultrasound — assessment of lumps, subcutaneous changes, and swelling.

An ultrasound at our clinic can be performed as a standalone diagnostic examination or as an extension of an orthopaedic consultation — the orthopaedic surgeon orders and performs the scan during the same visit.

When to have an ultrasound

  • Your infant is 6-8 weeks old — routine hip screening (especially with risk factors: breech delivery, family history of dysplasia, low amniotic fluid).
  • Joint, muscle, or tendon pain after an injury — assessing the extent of damage.
  • Swelling, clicking, or joint instability — ultrasound as rapid diagnostics before a potential MRI.
  • Suspected tendon inflammation (tendinopathy) or bursitis.
  • A lump or change in soft tissue requiring assessment.
  • Post-treatment follow-up — evaluating tendon or muscle healing.

What to expect

The examination takes 15-30 minutes depending on the scope. The doctor applies gel to the skin and moves the transducer — this is the only "discomfort", and it is minimal. For infants, the hip scan takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Results are available immediately — the doctor discusses them after the examination and provides a written report.

What to expect during the visit

1

Registration and preparation

An ultrasound requires no special preparation. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined. For an infant hip scan, try to schedule the visit for a time when the baby is fed and calm.

2

Examination

The doctor applies ultrasound gel to the skin and moves the transducer. Real-time images of the examined structures appear on screen. The examination takes 10-30 minutes depending on the scope. It is painless.

3

Discussion of results

The doctor discusses the findings immediately after the scan. A written report with images is provided. If the ultrasound is part of an orthopaedic consultation, the results are incorporated into the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Who is this service for

Newborns and infants (hip ultrasound)

Screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip. Recommended at 6-8 weeks of age. Painless and radiation-free.

Children with orthopaedic problems

Ultrasound of joints, muscles, and tendons — for growing pains, injuries, and suspected inflammatory conditions.

Adults after injuries

Imaging of muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries. Rapid assessment of injury extent without the need for MRI.

Athletes

Assessment of muscle and tendon injuries, monitoring healing progress. Quick results allow timely return-to-play decisions.

Orthopaedic patients

Ultrasound as an extension of the orthopaedic consultation — performed during the same visit with immediate results.

Indications

  • Routine infant hip screening (6-8 weeks of age)
  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip — diagnosis and treatment monitoring
  • Joint pain after injury (knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle)
  • Suspected tendon injury (e.g. Achilles tendon, rotator cuff)
  • Suspected ligament injury
  • Soft tissue swelling
  • Tendon inflammation (tendinopathy)
  • Bursitis
  • Lumps and changes in subcutaneous tissue
  • Post-injury healing follow-up for muscles or tendons
  • Supplementary diagnostics for an orthopaedic examination

Contraindications and limitations

  • Ultrasound has no typical contraindications — it is a non-invasive, radiation-free examination
  • Open wound at the scan site — examination after healing or on unaffected area

Therapy goals

  • Precise imaging diagnostics without radiation
  • Early detection of hip dysplasia in infants
  • Rapid assessment of musculotendinous injury extent
  • Monitoring the healing process
  • Supporting clinical decisions (orthopaedic surgeon, physiotherapist)
  • Immediate results — no waiting for a report

Realistic expectations

  • Ultrasound results are available immediately — the doctor discusses them after the scan and provides a written report.
  • Ultrasound excels at imaging soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) but cannot visualise the inside of bones or deep joint structures. In some cases, supplementary MRI may be necessary.
  • Infant hip ultrasound is a screening test — a normal result closes the matter. An abnormal result leads to a treatment plan set by the orthopaedic surgeon.
  • The examination is painless and safe — the only "discomfort" is cool gel on the skin.
  • Examination duration: 10-15 minutes (infant hips), 15-30 minutes (musculoskeletal ultrasound).

When to consider a different consultation

  • If you need bone imaging (suspected fracture) — ultrasound cannot replace X-ray. The orthopaedic surgeon will refer you for the appropriate examination.
  • If you need assessment of deep joint structures (menisci, cartilage) — the doctor may order MRI as a supplementary examination.
  • If you are looking for internal organ diagnostics (abdomen, thyroid) — NidoMed specialises in musculoskeletal and infant hip ultrasound. Internal organ ultrasound requires referral to another facility.

Orthopaedics

Ultrasound as part of an orthopaedic consultation in a single visit

Physiotherapy

Supplementary diagnostics during post-injury rehabilitation

Osteopathy

Ultrasound results support osteopathic assessment

Frequently asked questions

Is ultrasound safe for my baby?
Yes. Ultrasound does not use X-ray radiation — it relies on sound waves, which are completely safe. The examination can be repeated as many times as needed without any risk.
When should I have my baby's hips checked?
The recommended timing is 6-8 weeks of age. If risk factors are present (breech delivery, family history of dysplasia, low amniotic fluid), the doctor may recommend an earlier scan. Do not delay — early diagnosis means easier treatment.
Do I need a referral?
No. A referral is not required for an ultrasound at NidoMed. You can book directly, or the orthopaedic surgeon can order the scan during a consultation.
How long does the examination take?
Infant hip ultrasound — approximately 10-15 minutes. Musculoskeletal ultrasound — 15-30 minutes depending on the scope. Results are available immediately.
Does ultrasound replace MRI?
Not always. Ultrasound excels at imaging soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) but cannot see inside bones or deep joint structures. In some cases, the doctor may order an MRI as a supplementary examination. However, ultrasound is faster, more affordable, and available on the spot.
What should I bring to the examination?
A referral (if you have one, though it is not required), any previous imaging results for comparison. Comfortable clothing. For an infant — a spare nappy and a dummy.
